Who needs it?
It is among the documents requested from foreign nationals applying for a residence permit (ikamet izni) or extending one. Because the insurance is needed for the application itself, most first-time applicants buy the policy before they have a foreigner identity number (yabancı kimlik numarası, YKN). In that case the policy is arranged using your passport.
Who is exempt?
Not everyone has to buy this policy. In the cases below it may not be required. The authority receiving your application decides which document is accepted.
- People covered by active Turkish social security (SGK)
- Nationals of countries that have a bilateral social security agreement with Türkiye, who can document it
- Applicants over 65 years of age
Why the policy period matters
The policy is expected to cover the whole period of the residence permit you are requesting. A six-month policy for a one-year permit can cause your application to be treated as incomplete. Tell us the permit period when you ask for a quote; policies are usually issued for one or two years.
What affects the price?
The premium depends on age, policy period and the chosen coverage. Premiums rise with age. We do not publish price rankings or claim that one company is always the cheapest: premiums and hospital networks differ. In our quote, the price and the coverage are shown separately.
Frequently asked questions
I do not have a foreigner identity number yet. Can I still get insured?
Yes. The foreigner identity number (YKN) is issued after your first residence permit is granted, while the insurance is needed for the application. For first applications the quote is prepared with your passport number.
Is travel health insurance enough for a residence permit?
Usually not. Travel health insurance is written for a trip and for visa conditions. For a residence permit a separate policy covering the whole permit period is requested.
Do I need new insurance when I extend my permit?
A valid policy is requested for extensions as well. If your current policy ends before the new permit period, it has to be renewed.
